Follicular Unit Grafting

The science of hair transplant surgery has progressed light-years from the early days of large grafts that often produced an unnatural, conspicuous appearance. Thanks to the development of innovative techniques and advanced instrumentation, the results today are remarkably natural. Even our patients who comb their hair back remain confident that their new hairlines look perfectly natural.

Hairs grow from the scalp in natural groups called follicular units, containing from one to four hairs.  Follicular unit grafting involves transplanting or moving these units to the bald or thinning areas and this technique represents the most advanced form of hair transplants available.  We at Drs. Berry, Tessler & Aronovitz feel comfortable saying we are among the most experienced hair transplant doctors in Michigan.

Strip Harvesting/FUT

We begin by taking a thin strip of scalp from the back or sides of the head (the donor area).  This denser zone provides follicles that are genetically pre-destined to grow throughout your lifetime.

This strip is then divided into follicular units. The process demands a highly skilled, precise dissection technique performed under the magnification of stereoscopic microscopes.  Up to several thousand follicular units can be obtained from one donor strip.

The units are then separated into groups of one to four hairs for placement into the recipient (bald or thinning) area.  The one-hair grafts make up the front of the hairline, and the two, three and four hair grafts are placed behind them. These grafts are placed very close together in a random pattern, mimicking Nature and avoiding any appearance of rows.

This method results in hairlines that are very natural in appearance because we are only transplanting hairs as they naturally grow from the scalp. Furthermore, we can provide patients with excellent results in a single surgery. In so-called megasessions, we can transplant between 2,000 and 3500 follicular units in a single session, taking five to 10 hours to complete. This extremely precise and complex procedure requires a profound degree of skill and care by a large, highly trained staff.  The proper and effective performance of the procedure by a physician and assistants demands that they do it often and regularly.
